Akani Shimange is a black queer agender feminist and activist who has worked extensively on Trans and Gender Variant issues, SRHR, access to healthcare and human rights. Akani is currently heading Matimba, an organization based in South Africa that advocates exclusively for transgender and gender variant children and teenagers and has also recently joined Iranti-Org in October 2019. Before joining rejoining Iranti, they spent 2 years consulting for organizations they hold dear to their hearts such as GALA, Pan Africa ILGA and Triangle Project and working for organizations such as Gender DynamiX, Africa’s first registered organization that advocates for transgender individuals.
They have worked in civil society for over 8 years, on issues of Gender identity, Sexual reproductive health rights and Legal gender recognition from a sustainable development framework
Akani is an innovative thinker with an analytical approach to advocacy strategies, resulting in their ability to provide practical and realistic solutions complex challenges.
